White willow bark is a natural herb traditionally used to gently soothe away tension and other minor aches and pains. Each NutraBio vegetarian capsule contains 60 mg of standardized salicin. White willow bark extract is the natural alternative to chemical analgesics.

The use of white willow bark medicinally goes as far as ancient Egyptians who used it for inflammation and pain. In 1829, scientists in Europe identified the active ingredient in white willow bark, a compound called salicin. Extracting salicin from herbs was expensive so a synthetic version, salicylic acid was developed in Germany in 1852.

The problem was that synthetic salicylic acid was harder on the stomach than white willow bark. At therapeutic doses, people using the synthetic salicylic acid developed stomach ulcers and bleeding. The German company Bayer eventually created a synthetic, less harsh derivative of salicylic acid, called acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and mass-produced it under the name aspirin.

How Does White Willow Bark Extract Work?

Salicin, the active ingredient in White Willow Bark works to reduce pain by blocking the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in inflammation and muscle contraction. Further action in reducing pain occurs through White Willow Bark's ability to inhibit the action of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. White Willow Bark is thought to have analgesic properties.

Where Does White Willow Bark Extract Come From?

White Willow was one of the first herbs scientifically studied. White willow bark comes from a tree native to Europe and Asia. The name comes from the color of the leaves, which are covered with fine white hairs.

How Safe Is White Willow Bark Extract?

The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia records no known side effects to white willow bark. However, Aspirin and other synthetically created ASA products can cause side effects that willow bark doesn't. For those who prefer not to use drugs or chemical analgesics White Willow Bark Extract is the ideal alternative, and contains a standardized amount of White Willow Bark in every capsule.

Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, take 1-2 servings with your favorite beverage twice daily, preferably with food, or as directed by your health care professional.
