Don't be fooled by products that claim to be "100% Whey" or "Pure Whey" because these claims don't actually tell you what's in the product. There are 3 main types of whey protein used in sports supplements and each has drastically different protein values:

  1. Whey Protein Isolate (WPI): 90% protein value.
  2. Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC): 80% protein value.
  3. Sweet Whey: 30% protein value.

WPI, the best of the whey proteins, contains approximately 90% protein and is virtually FREE of lactose, cholesterol, fat and carbs. WPI has the highest protein value, the highest concentration of amino acids like BCAA’s, and is the cleanest of the whey proteins.

WPC is cheaper form of whey that yields only 80% protein as compared to WPI at 90% and has a lower concentration of amino acids. Unlike WPI it contains lactose, cholesterol, carbs and fat. It’s not a bad protein by any means, but don’t pay for WPI when a company is filling their product with cheaper WPC.

Sweet Whey is approximately 30% protein and 70% garbage. If you see sweet whey listed in the fine print under ingredients – stay away. Sweet whey is used in baking goods like cakes and cookies to artificially bring up the protein content. But nowadays supplement manufacturers are sneaking this crap into their product to bring the cost down.

So now you understand, a label claiming to be “pure whey” or “100% whey” can be made from a combination of any of these 3 proteins. Many whey products are cleverly named to make seem like they are pure Whey Protein Isolate, which is why you must look at the ingredient listing. This is the fine print usually located under the Nutritional Facts panel.
