It’s a sad fact, that
every 12 minutes someone in America is killed in a traffic accident. In
August of 2001, Shawn Doyle, chief instructor of Five Star Martial Arts
Academy in Jacksonville, Florida almost became part of this statistic.
While riding his
motorcycle home from a friend’s house one evening, Shawn lost control of his
bike and was sent flying through the air. Shawn’s next memory was waking up
in a hospital bed 30 days later. From what his doctors could tell him, Shawn
had landed directly on his head, causing such severe brain trauma to his
brain that he spent the next 30 days in a coma.

Shawn spent 30 days in a
coma. The prognosis was that he wouldn’t make it. His condition was so
severe that the family priest was soon brought in to read him his last
rites. |
When they found him,
Shawn had a broken collar bone, crushed pelvis, ripped off 80% of his right
ear, and his skull had been badly crushed from absorbing the bulk of the
impact of the landing. Although his doctors and family never gave up on
Shawn, the prognosis was that he wouldn’t make it. His condition was so
severe that the family priest was soon brought in to read him his last
riites.
On the outside Shawn was
beat up pretty badly, but what the doctors couldn’t know, was that on the
inside, there was spirit that just wouldn’t quit. An indomitable spirit, as
we call it in the martial arts, which just refused to let his body die.
Somehow, lying unconscious on the hospital bed, Shawn’s believes his martial
arts training and instincts kicked in to help him survive the battle of his
life. His fight between life and death took over thirty days, but in
September Shawn immerged from his coma.

“The
consensus was that I would never be able to get back into that shape.
Now, I weigh 265 and lowered my body weight under 12%. I’m stronger and
leaner now, and I believe my comeback is a testament to the benefits of
martial arts training and proper diet.”
As part of his recovery
diet, Shawn used customized meal replacement shakes by
Nutrabio.com Research. "We formulated his meal replacement shakes
to match his metabolic profile while incorporating the critical
nutritional demands needed for him to make a physical recovery." |
Shawn credits his
survival to many gifts in his life. Among them are the loving support of his
family, his faith in God, the skills of his doctors and his many years of
martial arts training, which he believes molded his body and his mind and
prepared him for this ultimate life challenge. Shawn also credits his
nutrition program which he believes kept his body in peak physical condition
and gave him the strength to survive both the coma and the rehabilitation.
Shawn’s battle didn’t end
when he woke up from his coma. Shawn spent four months in the hospital and
three more months in a wheel chair after his release. Recovery was a long,
hard road, and his rehabilitation was tough. At times he wanted to quit, but
his positive attitude and unwillingness to fail, which he says he developed
as a martial art student, drove him to fight on. Shawn went back to his
training and to his nutrition program, but it wasn’t easy. “I had gone
through so much in my life that it was tough to start training again, but I
knew the only way to get my body back into the shape it was prior to the
accident was through hard training and eating properly, so I forced myself
to do it”.
Shawn’s decision paid
off. “Before the accident I trained for almost two hours a day and I was on
a metabolically balanced nutrition program. I weighed 260 pounds with my
body fat under 15%. The consensus was that I would never be able to get back
into that shape. Now, I weigh 265 and lowered my body weight under 12%. I’m
stronger and leaner now, and I believe my comeback is a testament to the
benefits of martial arts training and proper diet.” Shawn is back teaching
in his school and I’m happy to say he has made a full recovery.
Like many people who live
through a near death experience, Shawn believes that there is a reason for
why he survived, and that has given him new meaning and purpose to his life.
As a martial arts student, he has learned much over the years, and now as a
martial arts instructor he believes he has the responsibility to pass those
same skills on to his students. “Life
is the most precious gift we have,
and to help others better their lives is the
most precious gift we can give.”
